Dr. Peter Kalu is a 3M Distinguished Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at the Florida A&M University-Florida State University College of Engineering since 1994. He holds a Ph.D. in Materials Science from Imperial College London (1986) and a B.Sc. in Engineering Physics from the University of Ife, Nigeria (1980). His research focuses on advanced materials processing, including severe plastic deformation (SPD), magnetic processing, and cassava-based case hardening of steels. He has published over 120 papers and secured grants like the $3M NSF PREM initiative to mentor students in Materials Science.
Education:
- Ph.D. Materials Science, Imperial College London, 1986
- B.Sc. Engineering Physics, University of Ife, 1980
Research Interests:
- Nanotechnology and bulk nanostructured materials via SPD
- Magnetic field-assisted materials processing
- Micromechanisms of deformation and recrystallization
- Utilization of indigenous African materials (e.g., cassava waste)
Recent Work Trends: His articles emphasize SPD techniques (wire drawing, ECAE), superconductors, and cryogenic material behavior. Key themes include microstructural characterization via SEM/TEM and optimizing processing-microstructure-property relationships.
Awards:
- 3M Distinguished Professor (ongoing)
- Fulbright Scholar (2009 Nigeria research)
Labs/Teams: Leads a lab equipped with state-of-the-art electron microscopes, funded by NSF grants. Collaborates with Prof. O. O. Adewoye’s group in Nigeria on low-cost steel processing.
