Professor Peter J. Karol is a Professor and Faculty Director of the Franklin Pierce Center for Intellectual Property at the University of New Hampshire’s Franklin Pierce School of Law. He holds a J.D. from Harvard Law School. His research focuses on intellectual property law with specialization in art, museum, copyright, and trademark law. He teaches courses including Intellectual Property Fundamentals, Law and the Visual Arts, and Trademarks & Deceptive Practices.
Prof. Karol’s scholarship explores intersections of law and art, including historical cases like Albrecht Dürer’s trademark practices and modern issues like AI copyright challenges. He frequently contributes to Artforum and appears on radio discussing IP matters, notably analyzing the Supreme Court’s Warhol v. Goldsmith decision. Prior to academia, he was a partner at Sunstein LLP, specializing in IP litigation and trademark strategies, and remains Of Counsel there.
His publications include Posthumous Art, Law and the Art Market: The Afterlife of Art (2022) and articles on NFTs, AI copyright, and transformative use doctrines. He actively bridges legal scholarship with contemporary art market dynamics, emphasizing practical implications of IP law in creative industries.
