Peter J. Delfyett

Peter J. Delfyett is a Pegasus Professor, Distinguished Professor, and Director of the Townes Laser Institute at CREOL, College of Optics and Photonics, University of Central Florida. He earned his Ph.D. from CUNY Graduate School (1988) after B.E. from City College of New York (1981) and M.S. from University of Rochester (1983). With prior experience at Bell Labs, his research revolutionized ultrafast semiconductor lasers.

Research focuses on:

• Ultrafast high-power semiconductor lasers
• Optical frequency combs
• Photonic networks for communications and materials processing

He founded Raydiance, Inc. to commercialize laser technologies.

Honors include:

• Election to National Academy of Engineering (2021)
• APS Schawlow Prize for laser science
• IEEE Streifer Award
• Multiple teaching excellence awards

Delfyett has mentored 33 PhD students and holds 45 patents in photonics technology. His research group advances chip-scale photonic systems for applications from communications to biomedical imaging.
