Peter J. Barnes serves as Professor of Thoracic Medicine and Head of Respiratory Medicine at Imperial College London's Faculty of Medicine, National Heart and Lung Institute, and holds an Honorary Consultant Physician position at Royal Brompton Hospital, London. Recognized as Europe's most highly cited clinical scientist and the world's most highly cited respiratory researcher over the past two decades, his work has profoundly impacted respiratory medicine.
His research centers on unraveling cellular and molecular mechanisms of asthma and COPD, with emphasis on therapeutic development and biomarker discovery through multidisciplinary translational approaches that bridge fundamental science with clinical applications. This integrative methodology provides novel insights into airway disease pathogenesis and treatment.
Key scientific honors include:
- Elected Fellow of the Royal Society (2007)
- Honorary Doctorate from University of Ferrara, Italy
- Honorary Doctorate from University of Athens, Greece
