Peter Hommelhoff

Prof. Peter Hommelhoff is a full professor and research group leader at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU), directing the “Hommelhoff Ultrafast Quantum Physics and Nanophotonics” group. His laboratory sits at the intersection of laser physics, quantum optics, electron optics, attosecond and strong-field physics, plasmonics, and solid-state physics.

Research Focus

• Ultrafast light-matter interaction on femtosecond and attosecond timescales
• Wave-particle control of electrons in nano-objects and on surfaces
• Development of quantum optical particle traps and quantum electron microscopes
• Novel laser-driven particle acceleration concepts using photonic nanostructures
• Generation of exotic electron wave packets and tailored photon states

Recent work has demonstrated landmark many-body effects with electrons, pushing the group toward full exploration of ultrafast many-body quantum dynamics. The team leverages state-of-the-art ultrafast optics, microwave field manipulation, and advanced laser sources to achieve these goals.
