Peter Holmqvist serves as Senior Lecturer and Head of Unit at the Department of Social Work within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Linköping University. His academic career spans historical and sociological research on children's health and development, with particular focus on mental health discourses in Sweden.
His educational background is reflected in his PhD dissertation on child psychology and psychiatry in Swedish media from 1968-2008. Holmqvist's research interests encompass the history of autism in Sweden, the psychiatric framing of childhood, and theoretical approaches to children and young people in social work contexts.
His publication record demonstrates consistent engagement with how mental health concepts evolve through media and professional discourse, particularly examining the shifting definitions of childhood mental illness and autism in Swedish contexts. His recent work explores the heterogeneity of autism representations in advocacy contexts and the historical development of autism diagnosis in Sweden.
Holmqvist teaches primarily in the Social Work program, contributing to courses on sociology, social and developmental psychology, conversational methodology, and children and young people in community care. He currently serves as Director of Studies at the Department of Social Work.
His academic affiliations include the Center for Medical Humanities and Bioethics (CMBS) and SocioFunk - Social perspectives on disability, where he collaborates across disciplines including sociology, psychology, pedagogy, and occupational therapy. He is also active in the Madness Studies Network and research on Popular Psychology, Self-Help Culture and the Happiness Industry.
