Peter Graumann

Peter Graumann is a Professor and Head of the research group AG Graumann at the Department of Chemistry, Philipps-Universität Marburg. He is affiliated with the SYNMIKRO Research Center, focusing on the molecular and cellular biochemistry of microorganisms.

Professor Graumann's research focuses on dynamic processes in bacteria, with particular emphasis on chromosome dynamics, organization of metabolic enzymes, and cell shape maintenance. His team investigates how bacterial shape is established, how the cell cycle is regulated, and mechanisms of DNA transfer between bacteria. Using Bacillus subtilis as a model organism for Gram-positive bacteria, his laboratory employs state-of-the-art biochemical tools and super resolution fluorescence microscopy to understand the 3D organization of bacterial cells and the dynamic positioning of cytosolic and membrane proteins within these non-compartmentalized cells.

His research group also studies bacterial physiological and morphological responses to environmental stress, including subcellular dynamics of metabolic enzymes during environmental adaptation, assembly of membrane-protective structures, and cyclic-di-GMP signaling pathways. The group's expertise spans synthetic microbiology, microbial genetics, bacterial cell biology, single molecule tracking, super resolution fluorescence microscopy, cell cycle regulation, biofilm formation, genome organization, and DNA repair mechanisms.

Professor Graumann leads a research team consisting of multiple doctoral candidates and research fellows. His laboratory is situated at two locations: the SYNMIKRO Research Center (Karl-von-Frisch-Straße 14) and the Department of Chemistry's Institute Building (Hans-Meerwein-Straße 4).
