معرفی
Peter G. Whang, MD is a Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation at Yale School of Medicine. He specializes in treating a wide range of pathological conditions of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar regions of the spine, with expertise in novel spinal technologies, minimally invasive surgeries, and motion-sparing procedures. Dr. Whang sees patients at the Yale Spine Center in New Haven as well as satellite offices in Guilford and Milford.
Dr. Whang's educational background includes:
- Biochemistry BA from Harvard College (1995)
- Medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine (1999)
- General Surgery Internship at University of California, Los Angeles (2000)
- Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at University of California, Los Angeles (2005)
- Spinal Surgery Fellowship at The Rothman Institute at Thomas Jefferson University (2006)
Dr. Whang's research focuses on advancing spinal care through innovative approaches. His primary interests include the biology of spinal fusion, bone grafting substitutes, and evidence-based medicine. He is actively involved in the development of new spinal implants and techniques, serving as an investigator for numerous clinical trials. Dr. Whang has particular expertise in sacroiliac joint fusion, a minimally invasive procedure for lower back pain that is still not widely available. His work bridges clinical practice with research to improve patient outcomes in spinal surgery.
Dr. Whang's recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on comparative effectiveness research in spinal procedures, particularly examining minimally invasive techniques versus traditional approaches. His work often analyzes complications, outcomes, and long-term impacts of various spinal interventions including interspinous spacers, decompression surgery, and fusion techniques. A significant portion of his research addresses sacroiliac joint disorders and innovative fusion approaches, establishing him as a thought leader in this specialized area of spine surgery.
Dr. Whang serves on multiple committees for the National Association of Spine Surgeons and is on the editorial staff of several publications in the field. He has been recognized for his clinical excellence, appearing in "Top Doctors" listings by Yale Medicine.
As an educator at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Whang is deeply committed to training the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons. He devotes significant time to teaching fellows, residents, and medical students, sharing his expertise in spinal surgery techniques and innovations. His mentorship extends to research guidance for trainees interested in orthopaedic and spinal research.
Dr. Whang is an active member of the Yale Spine Center team, which brings together multidisciplinary expertise to address complex spinal conditions. His work with Yale Ventures demonstrates engagement with translational research and innovation in medical devices for spinal surgery.
