Peter Fretwell is a Senior Geographic Information Officer and Remote Sensing Scientist at the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), leading the Wildlife From Space Group since 2022. His career spans 23 years at BAS, transitioning from cartographic work to pioneering satellite-based ecological monitoring. He holds the Erskine Fellowship (2023) and chairs the SCAR Bedmap3 Action Group and Southern Ocean Observing System initiatives.
- Research Themes: Satellite-based population ecology, Antarctic bedrock/topography mapping, remote sensing of polar ecosystems, and climate change impacts on wildlife.
- Technical Focus: Very High-Resolution (VHR) satellite imagery, digital elevation modeling, machine learning for wildlife detection, GIS analysis.
His work includes groundbreaking studies on emperor penguins, whales, albatrosses, and krill ecosystems, supported by over a dozen research grants. Key projects like Bedmap3 and 'Whales from Space' integrate satellite technology with conservation biology, revealing critical insights into polar species' responses to environmental change.
Scientific Awards:
- Erskine Fellowship, University of Canterbury (2023)
- Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society
He has advised numerous early-career researchers and PhD students through wildlife-focused projects, while his 100+ publications and H-index of 40 (2025) underscore his influence in polar geospatial science.
