Dr. Peter Evans is a Lecturer in Philosophy at the School of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry, University of Queensland. His research focuses on the philosophy of physics, particularly quantum foundations, time and causation in modern physics, and the epistemology of science. He is the Lead CI on the ARC Discovery Project The View From Somewhere: embodied agents and the quantum perspective (2025–2028), which explores the philosophical implications of embodied learning agents in quantum theory, and previously led the ARC Discovery Early Career Researcher Award project A philosophical exploration of simulating and controlling the quantum world (2017–2019).
- PhD in Philosophy, University of Sydney
- BA and BSc, Australian National University
Evans' research integrates experimental and theoretical advancements in quantum physics with philosophical inquiry. His work on quantum causal models, retrocausality, and perspectival objectivity examines how quantum mechanics challenges classical notions of time, causation, and reality. He has collaborated on interdisciplinary projects with physicists, including the FQxI-funded Information as fuel (2023), and has published extensively in top-tier journals like The British Journal for the Philosophy of Science and Synthese.
Recent publications highlight trends in quantum simulation epistemology, causal perspectivalism, and the interplay between observer-dependent reality and quantum correlations. His 2024 work with Hangleiter and Thébault on quantum wavefunction engineering and unitary reversal underscores the philosophical implications of quantum control techniques. In 2023, he explored causal perspectivalism through entropy and clock-based time definitions.
- ARC Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (2017–2019)
- ARC Discovery Projects grant (2025–2028)
Evans is available for HDR supervision, with current projects focusing on quantum theory's philosophical consequences for space, time, and agency. His supervision history includes advising PhD theses on quantum interpretations, metaphysics, and environmental philosophy. He is affiliated with the School of Mathematics and Physics through collaborative projects and maintains external profiles on platforms like ORCID and Google Scholar.
