Peter Eckart

Peter Eckart (born 1961) is Professor of Product Design and Integrative Design at Hochschule für Gestaltung Offenbach (HfG Offenbach), where he has taught since 2000. He currently serves as Vice President Extern of the university and co-directs the Offenbach Institute for Mobility Design (OIMD) with Prof. Dr. Kai Vöckler. Previously, he was Dean of the Design Department from 2007-2010 and scientific coordinator of the LOEWE research focus 'Infrastructure - Design - Society'.

Eckart studied product design at Bergische Universität GHS Wuppertal and Hamburg University of Fine Arts (HFBK) under Prof. Peter Raacke and Prof. Dieter Rams. His professional journey includes winning the Braun Prize (1989), working at Braun Kronberg, founding Eckart+Barski Design (1993), and establishing unit-design GmbH with Bernd Hilpert (2000).

His research focuses on integrative design applications in public spaces, mobility systems, and sustainable design solutions. Eckart's work bridges product design with broader urban and social contexts, particularly exploring how design shapes future mobility experiences. His projects address complex challenges in guidance systems, public space design, and sustainable transportation networks.

Eckart's recent publications demonstrate a clear trend toward mobility design as an interdisciplinary field connecting architecture, urban planning, and user experience. His work emphasizes sustainable, people-centered approaches to mobility infrastructure and services, moving beyond traditional transportation design to consider mobility as an integrated service experience.

Eckart has mentored numerous students including Yujin Kang (German Design Graduates-Award winner), Clara Brandt, Maurice Riegler, Emilie Burfeind, and Kai Linke. His research has been supported through the LOEWE research network 'Infrastructure Design Society' and BMBF-funded projects like InterMoDe. The Offenbach Institute for Mobility Design (OIMD), which he co-directs, serves as the primary research hub for his team's work on sustainable mobility solutions.
