Dr. Peter Dietsch is a Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Victoria, currently on leave until December 31, 2025. He previously taught at the Université de Montréal from 2005 to 2021. His research focuses on economic ethics, tax justice, normative dimensions of monetary policy, and income inequalities. Dietsch holds an MSc in Economics from the University of St. Gallen and a PhD in Philosophy from the London School of Economics.
His work bridges philosophy and economics, addressing global justice in taxation, monetary policy equity, and the structural causes of income disparity. Notable publications include Catching Capital: The Ethics of Tax Competition (Oxford UP, 2015), co-authored Do Central Banks Serve the People? (Polity, 2018), and co-edited Global Tax Governance (ECPR Press, 2016). He has received prestigious awards, including the Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award (2021) and Royal Society of Canada membership (2017).
Dietsch’s current research explores two primary areas: (1) the cooperative surplus theory as a foundation for income distribution justice, and (2) the intersection of economic efficiency and broader societal values like democracy and environmental sustainability. He critiques tax competition’s impact on global inequality and analyzes monetary policy’s role in exacerbating wealth gaps.
His advising and grants include significant contributions to academic and policy debates on fiscal-monetary coordination, green central banking, and equitable carbon taxation. Dietsch’s work is affiliated with the University of Victoria’s Department of Philosophy and collaborates with interdisciplinary teams addressing global economic challenges.
