Professor Peter Dawkins AO is a former Vice-Chancellor and President of Victoria University, where he championed inclusive education and pioneered the award-winning VU Block Model® in 2018. He previously held senior academic roles, including Professor of Economics at Curtin University and the Ronald Henderson Professor at the University of Melbourne's Melbourne Institute. As Deputy Secretary of Victoria’s Department of Treasury and Finance and Secretary of the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, he shaped public policy. He revived his teaching career by instructing an economics class under the Block Model, emphasizing hands-on student engagement.
Education: BSc and PhD from Loughborough University (UK), MSc Economics from the University of London. Honored as a Distinguished Alumnus by Loughborough in 2012.
Research Focus: Economic policy, education reform, and regional development. Key contributions include dual-sector university funding models and strategies for Melbourne’s western economic growth through the West of Melbourne Economic Development Alliance (WoMEDA), where he serves as Deputy Chair.
Awards: Appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2017 for services to education and economic policy.
Leadership & Initiatives: Spearheaded Victoria University’s transformation into a leader of innovative pedagogy. Advocated for skills development aligned with workforce needs in Melbourne’s west. Collaborated with former Premier Steve Bracks to drive regional economic strategies.
