Peter D. Newell is an Associate Professor and Department Associate Chair in the Department of Biological Sciences at the State University of New York at Oswego. He holds a Ph.D. in Molecular Microbiology from the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth and a B.A. in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry from Middlebury College.
His research focuses on:
- Interactions between animals and microbes, particularly invertebrates and their gut microbiota
- Microbial interactions within host-associated communities
- Bacterial adaptations to host-associated lifestyles
- Specialty areas include microbiology, genetics, and genomics of bacteria
Dr. Newell has supervised multiple graduate and undergraduate researchers in investigating Drosophila-microbe interactions, biofilm formation, and microbial metabolism. His publications demonstrate consistent focus on host-microbe relationships using genetic and genomic approaches.
Research trends show:
- Strong emphasis on Drosophila as a model system for microbiome studies
- Integration of genomic and metagenomic approaches since 2014
- Increasing focus on metabolic interactions in recent work
