Peter Carroll is a Professor in the Department of Urology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), School of Medicine. He is a leading expert in prostate cancer research, clinical management, and active surveillance. He serves as Principal Investigator of CaPSURE™, a national prostate cancer disease registry, and co-leads the multi-institutional Prostate Cancer Active Surveillance Study (PASS). His work is focused on improving risk stratification, reducing overtreatment, and enhancing quality of life for prostate cancer patients.
- BA in Zoology, University of California, Berkeley (1974)
- MD, Georgetown University School of Medicine (1979)
- MPH, University of California, Berkeley (2008)
Dr. Carroll's research interests center on prostate cancer, particularly active surveillance, biomarker discovery, clinical epidemiology, and lifestyle impacts on cancer survivorship. His work aims to identify which patients can safely avoid radical treatment and which benefit from early intervention. He integrates molecular imaging, genomic data, and clinical outcomes to refine risk prediction models.
His recent publications reveal a strong focus on optimizing active surveillance protocols, redefining clinically significant prostate cancer, evaluating non-invasive diagnostics, and assessing the role of lifestyle and genomics in disease progression. The articles span top journals in urology, oncology, and general medicine, reflecting interdisciplinary collaboration and high-impact findings.
Dr. Carroll has received numerous scientific honors, including:
- Ken and Donna Derr - Chevron Endowed Chair in Prostate Cancer (2001)
- AUA Eugene Fuller Triennial Prostate Award (2010)
- Society of Urologic Oncology Medal (2010)
- Barringer Medal from the American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons (2014)
He has served as Principal or Co-Principal Investigator on multiple NIH-funded grants, including the UCSF Prostate Cancer SPORE and the Cancer Center Support Grant. He mentors numerous researchers and collaborates widely through consortia such as GAP3 and PROST-QA/RP2. His editorial roles include Associate Editor for The Journal of Urology and Editor for AUA Update.
Dr. Carroll is actively involved in several research programs and teams, including the CaPSURE™ registry, the PASS cohort, and the Global Action Plan Prostate Cancer Active Surveillance (GAP3) Consortium. These initiatives involve multi-institutional collaborations focused on improving prostate cancer care through data-driven, patient-centered strategies.
