Peter C. Whybrow, M.D. is the Judson Braun Distinguished Professor and Executive Chair of the Department of Psychiatry & Biobehavioral Sciences at the David Geffen School of Medicine, University of California, Los Angeles. Recruited to UCLA in 1997 from the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Whybrow has established himself as a leading authority in psychiatric research and clinical practice with an extensive publication record spanning over three decades.
Dr. Whybrow received his medical training in London and North Carolina, with specialization in endocrinology and psychiatry. His educational journey began in England where he was a member of the scientific staff of the British Medical Research Council before joining Dartmouth Medical School in the 1970s, where he served as Chairman of Psychiatry and later as Executive Dean. He was recruited to the University of Pennsylvania in 1984 as the Ruth Meltzer Professor and Chairman of Psychiatry until 1996.
Dr. Whybrow is an internationally recognized authority on depression, manic-depressive disease, and the effects of thyroid hormone on brain and human behavior. His research spans multiple domains including bipolar disorder, mood disorders, digital mental health, and the application of artificial intelligence in psychiatry. Recent work focuses on the relationship between environmental factors like solar insolation and bipolar disorder, as well as the impact of digital technologies on mental healthcare delivery. He has pioneered the development of digital tools for mood disorder monitoring, notably the ChronoRecord software used in longitudinal bipolar disorder studies for over 20 years.
Analysis of Dr. Whybrow's recent publications reveals a strong focus on the intersection of technology and mental health. His work examines artificial intelligence applications in psychiatry, digital mood tracking systems, and the impact of environmental factors on bipolar disorder. There's a clear trajectory toward understanding how digital tools can enhance mental healthcare while addressing associated ethical concerns and implementation challenges. His research consistently bridges neuroscience, endocrinology, and digital innovation to develop more effective assessment and treatment approaches for mood disorders.
Dr. Whybrow has received numerous honors including:
- Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists
- Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science
- Fellow of the American College of Psychiatrists
- Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association
- Los Angeles Times best seller for "American Mania: When More Is Not Enough"
- Cited by the New York Times Magazine as one of 78 notable ideas for 2005
As Executive Chair of the Department of Psychiatry & Biobehavioral Sciences at UCLA, Dr. Whybrow oversees significant research initiatives and clinical programs. His leadership extends to developing digital tools for mood disorder monitoring, as evidenced by the ChronoRecord software used in longitudinal bipolar disorder studies for over 20 years. His research has been supported by various grants focusing on the relationship between environmental factors and mood disorders, thyroid hormone effects on brain function, and digital innovations in mental healthcare. He frequently advises universities, foundations, and government agencies on psychiatric matters.
Dr. Whybrow leads research teams focused on understanding the biological underpinnings of mood disorders, with particular emphasis on how environmental factors like light exposure influence bipolar disorder. His work integrates neuroscience, endocrinology, and digital health technologies to develop more effective assessment and treatment approaches for mood disorders. He has authored five books including "A Mood Apart" and "American Mania: When More Is Not Enough," demonstrating his commitment to translating complex scientific concepts for broader public understanding.
