Peter C. Mancall is the Andrew W. Mellon Professor of the Humanities and Professor of History and Anthropology at the University of Southern California's Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences. He also serves as the Linda and Harlan Martens Director of the USC-Huntington Early Modern Studies Institute. In 2019-2020, he held the prestigious Harmsworth Professorship of American History at Oxford University.
Professor Mancall is a leading historian specializing in early American history, with particular expertise in colonial America, Native American history, Puritan society, and the Atlantic World. His research explores the complex interactions between European settlers and Indigenous peoples, the development of colonial societies, and the construction of historical narratives about America's founding.
His scholarly output reveals a consistent focus on challenging sanitized versions of American history, particularly regarding the relationships between settlers and Native Americans. Mancall frequently examines how historical grievances, cultural conflicts, and power dynamics shaped early America, with recent work connecting colonial-era politics of resentment to contemporary political phenomena.
Among his notable honors, Mancall is an elected fellow of the Society of American Historians and the Royal Historical Society, and an elected member of the American Antiquarian Society and the Colonial Society of Massachusetts. His work extends beyond academia through publications in The Chronicle of Higher Education, Bloomberg Businessweek, and American Heritage, and features on NPR's 'All Things Considered' and 'The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.'
Professor Mancall has supervised numerous doctoral students and received research support from major institutions including the University of Southern California, the Huntington Library, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and Oxford University. His current major project is 'American Origins,' which will serve as volume one of the Oxford History of the United States.
