Dr. Peter Bijl is an Associate Professor in Marine Palynology & Palaeoceanography at Utrecht University's Department of Earth Sciences. He specializes in Antarctic and Southern Ocean climate evolution, focusing on palynological and geochemical proxies to reconstruct past environmental changes. His research integrates organic fossils (dinoflagellate cysts) and biomarkers to study ocean circulation, ice sheet dynamics, and CO2-driven climate transitions. Key projects include the OceaNice ERC-funded initiative exploring Antarctic ice-ocean interactions during warm climates.
- Teaches courses on ice-ocean-climate interactions and paleoclimate reconstruction.
- Recipient of prestigious awards: Arne Richter Award (2014) and Heineken Young Scientist Award (2018).
- Collaborates internationally via IODP expeditions and platforms like paleolatitude.org.
Research highlights include documenting Eocene Southern Ocean warmth and Antarctic ice sheet dynamics, with over 50 peer-reviewed publications. He leads interdisciplinary teams and contributes to open science initiatives, including the FREE SODA project for Southern Ocean data integration.
