Peter Benner

Peter Benner is a Professor and Director at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems in Magdeburg, where he leads the Computational Methods in Systems and Control Theory group. He also holds an Honorarprofessor position for Mathematics at Otto-von-Guericke Universität Magdeburg since 2011. Benner has previously served as Managing Director of the Max Planck Institute during multiple periods (2013-2014, 2021-2022, and 2025-2026), demonstrating his leadership in the field.

Benner's research focuses on Scientific Machine Learning, Numerical Linear and Multilinear Algebra, Model Order Reduction and Reduced-order Modeling, Numerical Methods in Systems and Control Theory, PDE Constrained Optimization, High-performance and Power-aware Computing, and Mathematical Software development.
