Peter B. Furko

Peter B. Furko is a distinguished Professor and Vice-Rector for Science and Innovation at Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church in Hungary, where he serves in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of English Linguistics. With a career spanning over two decades, Furko has established himself as a leading scholar in discourse pragmatics and linguistic variation.

His educational background includes a PhD in Linguistics from University of Debrecen (2006), a DSc from Hungarian Academy of Sciences (2024), and habilitation from Eötvös Loránd University (2019). His research focuses on discourse markers across languages and genres, with particular expertise in English-Hungarian contrastive analysis and pragmatic variation.

Furko's scholarly work reveals consistent exploration of discourse markers in diverse contexts - from political discourse and media to literary texts and translation. His research demonstrates how these linguistic elements function across different languages (particularly English and Hungarian), genres, and communicative situations, with recent work incorporating computational methods for discourse marker annotation. His publications show a clear trajectory from theoretical foundations of discourse markers to applied research examining their manipulation in political contexts and their representation in literary works.

As an academic leader, Furko has supervised doctoral students including Koczogh Helga, Abuczki Ágnes, Nagy Anna, and Várhegyi Nikolett. He has secured significant research funding through international collaborations, notably serving on the Management Committee of COST IS1312 TextLink project (2014-2018) and as Board Member of DiscourseNet (ERC Disconex) since 2018. He leads the research group "Cross-linguistic and cross-genre research of discourse markers" at KRE-BTK and is actively involved in the DiPVaC Research Network.

Furko directs the Department of English Linguistics at KRE and heads the Linguistics School at Benda Kálmán College of Excellence. His research group actively collaborates with international partners across Europe, including the University of Debrecen, University of Warwick, University of Bremen, and numerous other institutions across 20+ countries.
