His work often explores the intersection of technology and pedagogy, particularly mobile learning in mathematics and science education. He has pioneered research on student-generated animations in chemistry education and investigated how metaphor and analogy function in science learning. His scholarship on education futures employs scenario planning and backcasting to examine potential trajectories for teacher education in the STEM fields.
His recent publications reveal a consistent focus on technology integration in education, with particular attention to mobile learning in STEM subjects. His work demonstrates a shift from examining teacher perspectives to increasingly incorporating student voices in understanding technology-enhanced learning. The research shows strong emphasis on practical applications in classroom settings, with growing interest in futures methodologies to address long-term challenges in teacher education.
Awarded the UTS Vice Chancellor Medal for Research and Teaching Integration in 2013, his scholarly contributions include:
- UTS Vice Chancellor Medal for Research and Teaching Integration (2013)
- Co-editing special issues on Teacher Education Futures in Teacher Development
- Co-editing special issues on Science Education Futures in Research in Science Education
- Authoring the influential book "Uncertainty in Teacher Education Futures: Scenarios, Politics and STEM"
As a research leader, Aubusson has served as Lead Chief Investigator on the ARC Discovery Project "Mobilising teaching: improving the quality of learning with mobile-intensive pedagogies" and as Chief Investigator on numerous other major research projects. His collaborative work extends internationally, particularly through his leadership with Sandy Schuck on education futures research. His grants portfolio demonstrates sustained funding from diverse sources including ARC, NSW Department of Education, Australian Academy of Science, and industry partners like Microsoft.
He has been instrumental in developing frameworks like the Sustainability Action Process (SAP) used in the Climate Clever Energy Savers program, demonstrating his commitment to translating research into practical educational tools. His leadership in professional organizations, particularly the Australasian Science Education Research Association (ASERA), where he served as President and remains on the Board, underscores his influence in shaping science education research directions across the region.
