معرفی
Peter Asaro is an Associate Professor at The New School's School of Media Studies, where he explores the intersections of artificial intelligence, robotics, and digital media. His research focuses on the ethical, legal, and social implications of autonomous military technologies, surveillance systems, and algorithmic decision-making.
Education:
- PhD
- MCS (Master of Cognitive Science)
- MA
- BA
Research interests revolve around the social, cultural, and political dimensions of military robotics, including UAV drones and autonomous weapons. He combines media theory with science and technology studies to analyze how technology mediates human experience and decision-making. His work also examines consumer robotics, industrial automation, and autonomous vehicles through lenses of agency, liability, privacy, and surveillance.
Recent publications and projects address AI ethics in predictive policing, algorithmic violence, and the regulation of autonomous artificial agents. He co-founded the International Committee for Robot Arms Control, advocating for human rights and arms control in lethal robotics. His funded projects include the Oral History of Robotics (IEEE & NEH) and Regulating Autonomous Artificial Agents (Future of Life Institute).
Scientific awards:
- 2010 SXSW Web Interactive Award for Technical Achievement
- 2010 SXSW Web Interactive Award for Best of Show
Asaro's grant collaborations span institutions like Princeton University's Center for Information Technology Policy, Rutgers University's Center for Cultural Analysis, and the Austrian Academy of Sciences. He has also contributed to technologies at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) and Wolfram Research, including the natural language interface for Wolfram|Alpha used by Apple's Siri and Microsoft's Bing.
His teaching includes courses on media theory, AI-generated deception, and thesis supervision for graduate students in media studies.
