Peter A. Humphrey, M.D., Ph.D., is a Professor of Pathology and Director of Genitourinary Pathology at Yale School of Medicine. He holds a B.A. in Chemistry and Biochemistry, and an M.D. and Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Kansas. His career includes faculty roles at Duke University Medical Center and Washington University School of Medicine before joining Yale. Specializing in surgical and urologic pathology, his research focuses on prostate cancer's clinico-pathologic and molecular aspects, including diagnostic refinements and biomarker development. He is a past president of the International Society of Urological Pathology and the Arthur Purdy Stout Society of Surgical Pathologists.
Key research areas include prostate cancer variants (e.g., pseudohyperplastic, microcystic), prognostic factors (e.g., Gleason grading, margin involvement), and biomarkers (e.g., AMACR, ERG). His work extends to kidney and testicular cancers, including rhabdoid renal cell carcinoma and SALL4 as a diagnostic marker for testicular tumors. Current projects involve multiphoton microscopy and AI-driven pathology tools.
Humphrey has authored/co-authored textbooks such as Prostate Pathology and WHO Classification of Tumors of the Urinary System. He serves on editorial boards of major pathology journals and has over 360 publications. He actively contributes to professional societies and global pathology practice standards.
