Professor Pete Britz is an aquaculture and fisheries specialist at Rhodes University's Department of Ichthyology and Fisheries Science in South Africa. He has made significant contributions to aquaculture research and development, governance, and sector planning in southern Africa.
- Qualifications: BSc (Hons, UCT), MSc/PhD in Fisheries Science (Rhodes University)
His research focuses on:
- Abalone fishery restoration and stock enhancement
- Fishery governance and integrated coastal management
- Aquaculture technology development for marine finfish and abalone ranching
- Recycling organic effluents for aquaponics
- Economic development and sector planning in aquaculture and fisheries
- Multi-disciplinary marine resource management approaches
As Chair of the Aquaculture Association of Southern Africa and former President of the International Abalone Society, he provides expert advice to industry, government, and development agencies. His work has resulted in 63 peer-reviewed publications.
Scientific awards include:
- International Abalone Society Medal (2012)
- Aquaculture Association of Southern Africa 'Aquaculturist of the Year' (2013)
