Professor Perry Xiao is a faculty member at the School of Engineering, London South Bank University, where he serves as Course Director for the Master of Research in General Engineering. His academic background includes a PhD in Photophysics (1998), MSc in Condensed Matter Physics (1993), and BEng in Opto-Electronics (1990).
- Education:
- PhD in Photophysics, 1994–1998
- MSc in Condensed Matter Physics, 1990–1993
- BEng in Opto-Electronics, 1986–1990
Xiao’s research focuses on developing novel infrared and electronic sensing technologies for biomedical applications (e.g., skin hydration, Trans-Epidermal Water Loss) and industrial Non-Destructive Testing. His work integrates machine learning with photothermal radiometry and capacitive imaging, yielding over 100 peer-reviewed publications and 3 books. Recent trends emphasize deep learning-driven segmentation of planetary data and error analysis in vision systems.
Scientific Awards:
- Fellow of The Institution of Engineering and Technology (FIET)
- Senior Fellow of Higher Education Academy (SFHEA)
- EPSRC grant (GR/M56722/01)
Xiao has supervised 10 PhD students and secured nearly £1M in research income. He co-founded Biox Systems Ltd., commercializing AquaFlux© and Epsilon, used globally by institutions and corporations like Unilever and Johnson & Johnson. His contributions to REF 2014 and 2021 highlight his research impact, and he actively reviews grants for BBSRC and EPSRC.
He has taught over 20 UG/PG courses, including advanced instrumentation, robotics, and internet technologies, and currently leads subjects such as Team Design Project and Computer Systems and Networks.
