Perry Adebar

Dr. Perry Adebar is a Professor of Structural Engineering at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in the Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Applied Science. He specializes in seismic design and evaluation of high-rise concrete shear wall buildings. Dr. Adebar chairs the technical committee for the Canadian Standard CSA A23.3 on Design of Concrete Structures and leads the Seismic Design Subcommittee (Clause 21). He has served on key national committees, including the National Model Code Committee (NMCC-SD) for seismic design provisions in the National Building Code of Canada, and previously chaired the National Standing Committee on Earthquake Design (SC-ED) from 2019 to 2024. He is a member of Canada Task Force 1 (TF-1) Heavy Urban Search and Rescue (HUSAR) Team and serves on the Board of Directors of the Structural Engineers Association of BC (SEABC). His research focuses on concrete structures, seismic design innovations, and resilient building systems, with over 50 publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Dr. Adebar has held administrative roles as Head of UBC Civil Engineering (2014–2019) and Associate Dean of the Faculty of Applied Science (1999–2008). He has received notable awards, including the APEGBC Teaching Award (2015), UBC Killam Teaching Prize (2013), Meritorious Achievement Award (2004), and ACI Structural Research Award (1998). His consulting work includes evaluations and repairs of concrete structures globally, with a focus on post-earthquake resilience. His teaching includes courses such as CIVL 430 (Design of Concrete Structures) and CIVL 513 (Concrete Structures).

His research emphasizes seismic performance of high-rise buildings, including shear wall behavior, diaphragm flexibility, and code-compliant design. Recent work addresses innovative approaches to earthquake-resilient structures, non-linear foundation rotation, and higher-mode shear force analysis in Canadian standards. He actively contributes to advancing seismic design practices through committee work and academic publications.
