Per-Erik Lyrén is an Associate Professor (currently on leave) and Analyst at Umeå University's Department of Applied Educational Sciences, where he conducts research at the intersection of psychometrics, educational assessment, and clinical outcomes measurement. His work spans university admissions testing systems and patient-reported outcome development for orthopedic conditions.
His primary research focuses on psychometric methodology in both educational and medical contexts. Key areas include validation of assessment instruments, test-taking behavior analysis, subscore reliability, and responsiveness of outcome measures. He has pioneered the Atroshi-Lyrén 6-item symptoms scale for carpal tunnel syndrome and contributed extensively to Sweden's Scholastic Aptitude Test (SweSAT) framework, examining how test results predict academic performance and exploring adaptations during crises like the COVID-19 pandemic.
Recent publications (2020-2024) reveal a dual trajectory: advancing medical measurement for Dupuytren's disease and carpal tunnel syndrome through patient-centered outcome tools, while simultaneously innovating in educational assessment with studies on fairness in admissions testing, cluster analysis of test-taker profiles, and pandemic-era adaptations of large-scale assessments. His work consistently applies sophisticated statistical methods including item response theory and classical test theory.
Lyrén actively contributes to the Measurement in Behavioral Sciences research group at Umeå University, maintaining strong collaborations with orthopedic researchers and educational policymakers. His current projects include developing new patient-reported outcome measures and analyzing longitudinal relationships between admissions test performance and university success.
