Per Davidsson is Professor at Queensland University of Technology's Australian Centre for Entrepreneurship Research (QUT Business School), leading foundational work on venture creation processes and external enablement frameworks. His research spans entrepreneurship theory, nascent venture development, and innovation management with over 290 publications since 1989.
His primary research interests include entrepreneurial opportunity conceptualization (notably critiquing 'opportunity' constructs in favor of venture idea assessment), external enablement of new ventures (developing frameworks for how environmental factors facilitate creation), and small business growth dynamics. Recent work examines sustainability-oriented ventures, digital entrepreneurship, and spinoff network evolution.
Davidsson pioneered the Comprehensive Australian Study of Entrepreneurial Emergence (CAUSEE), a major longitudinal project tracking nascent entrepreneurs. His 2020-2025 publications show increasing focus on sustainability, AI's role in entrepreneurship, and network imprinting effects in spinoffs. Key theoretical contributions include reconceptualizing entrepreneurial opportunities (2015) and unifying venture creation research (2023).
His scientific impact is evidenced by high-citation works including 'Entrepreneurial opportunities and the entrepreneurship nexus' (5,484 citations) and 'Panel studies of new venture creation' (2,038 citations). He serves as editor for major conference proceedings and research vignettes through ACE.
Davidsson's advising is reflected through long-term collaborations with scholars like Paul Steffens, Scott Gordon, and Julienne Senyard across 50+ co-authored works. His research teams often investigate bricolage in resource-constrained firms and internationalization of technology ventures.
