Pele Cannon is a Post-doctoral Fellow at the Fenner School of Environment & Society, Australian National University. She completed both her BA (Hons I) and PhD at ANU, with her doctoral research focusing on human-nonhuman relationships and environmental governance. Currently, she serves as a Co-investigator on two major research projects and convenes research skills coursework for Honours and Masters (Advanced) students.
Her academic journey includes diverse professional experiences, from working as a Project Manager for the Fisheries Research & Development Corporation to serving as Operations and Education Caretaker at a wolf sanctuary in Colorado, USA. These experiences inform her interdisciplinary approach to environmental research.
Cannon's research explores the complex relationships between humans and nonhuman entities within environmental systems. Her work integrates perspectives from environmental ethics, philosophy, and governance to examine how stories and narratives shape our understanding of coexistence and responsibility. She employs qualitative methodologies including participant observation, narrative analysis, and in-depth interviews to investigate everyday practices of environmental decision-making.
Her recent publications demonstrate a trajectory from foundational work in human ecology through to applied research on wildfire governance in Australia. The articles reveal growing engagement with practical environmental challenges while maintaining theoretical depth in environmental philosophy and ethics.
