Professor Pedro Rebelo is a Professor of Sonic Arts at Queen's University Belfast, affiliated with the School of Arts, English and Languages and the Sonic Arts Research Centre (SARC). He holds roles as Director of SARC and an associate fellow of the Senator George J. Mitchell Institute for Global Peace, Security and Justice. His work bridges composition, sound art, and community engagement, focusing on conflict transformation, immersive sound design, and socially engaged art.
Rebelo earned his PhD from the University of Edinburgh (2002) and has led projects in Belfast, Brazil, Portugal, and Mozambique. Notable collaborations include the £1m AHRC-funded 'Sounding Conflict' project and participatory initiatives such as the Som de Maré project in Rio's favelas. His music and installations have been showcased globally, including at the Metropolitan Arts Centre (Belfast), Espaço Ecco (Brasilia), and MAC Nitéroi.
His research emphasizes sound in conflict zones, palliative care environments, and community-based art. Key awards include the Northern Bank 'Building Tomorrow's Belfast' Award (2012) and 'Silent Spring' Wex Photo Video Prize (2023). Rebelo has held visiting roles at Stanford University and UFRJ (Brazil) and chaired major conferences like ICMC 2008 and ISMIR 2012.
Current research explores immersive audio experiences, with projects like the NI Hospice Sound Garden and studies on patient-centered sound therapy. He supervises PhD students in sound art, socially engaged arts, and multimodal food experiences.
