Pedro Mendonça is an Associate Professor at Heriot-Watt University’s School of Social Sciences, affiliated with the Edinburgh Business School and the Centre for Employment, Work and the Professions (CREWs). His research focuses on workplace power dynamics, algorithmic management, and platform capitalism’s impact on labor markets, with emphasis on gig economy workers, migrant labor, and trade union strategies. He holds a PhD from the University of Strathclyde and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
His teaching includes coordinating courses on Employment Relations and Employment Trends. Recent projects include evaluating fair work practices in Scotland’s platform economy (RSE grant-funded) and analyzing informal work patterns across the UK, Spain, and Portugal. He contributed to policy discussions at the Scottish Parliament and serves on the editorial board of Work, Employment and Society.
Key research themes include institutional frameworks shaping migration and labor policies, supply chain management’s role in workplace flexibility, and the interplay between technology and worker agency. His work addresses socio-economic forces transforming contemporary work, with case studies in the UK, Spain, and Portugal.
