Pedro J. Alvarez is the George R. Brown Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Rice University. He serves as founding Director of the NSF Engineering Research Center on Nanotechnology-Enabled Water Treatment (NEWT) and Director of the Rice WaTER Institute. He holds board membership at Houston Endowment Inc. and is an elected member of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), Chinese Academy of Engineering, and American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Education: B.Eng. in Civil Engineering (McGill University), M.S. and Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering (University of Michigan).
Research Focus: Dr. Alvarez pioneers interdisciplinary solutions for environmental challenges. His work spans nanotechnology applications for water purification, bioremediation of contaminated sites, transport mechanisms of pollutants, sustainable water reuse systems, antibiotic resistance mitigation, and biofuel water footprint analysis. His research bridges environmental engineering with materials science and public health.
Leadership & Service: Executive Editor of Environmental Science and Technology; former advisor to EPA and NSF Engineering Directorate; Past President of the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors (AEESP).
