Pedro Fernandes

Pedro Fernandes is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Engineering, Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias, and an Assistant Researcher at the Department of Bioengineering, Instituto Superior Técnico. He holds a PhD in Biotechnology (1999) from IST/UTL and has co-founded Biotrend. His research focuses on biocatalytic systems, with over 85 peer-reviewed articles and 17 book chapters. He has supervised 1 post-doctoral fellow, 5 PhD theses (4 completed), and 20 MSc theses (18 completed).

Education: BSc in Chemical Engineering (IST, 1989), MSc in Biotechnology/Biochemical Engineering (IST/UTL, 1994), PhD in Biotechnology (IST/UTL, 1999).

Research interests include applied biocatalysis, bioprocess design, and enzyme immobilization. His work bridges academic and industrial applications, emphasizing sustainable biocatalytic systems for food and environmental sectors.

Awards: Scientific Award UTL/Santander Totta 2011 in Biochemical Engineering.
