He holds a PhD in human geography and regional development from Charles University in Prague and has been a key figure in regional development research, particularly in the Visegrád countries (Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary). He is actively involved in international research projects, including a Vice-chair role in the COST Action CA18214 funded by Horizon 2020, and leads national projects on creative economies and coworking spaces.
His educational background includes multiple degrees in geography and social sciences from the University of Ostrava and Charles University. He has held academic positions since 2000, progressing from PhD student to senior lecturer and department head. His international experience includes teaching and research stays in Austria, Slovenia, and Poland under the CEEPUS and Erasmus programs.
Bednar’s research interests center on cultural and creative industries, coworking spaces, cluster policies, spatial econometrics, and regional socio-economic development. He applies advanced spatial analysis to understand urban and regional dynamics, particularly in post-socialist and peripheral contexts. His work bridges geography, economics, and public policy.
His recent publications (2020–2024) show a strong focus on coworking spaces, creative clusters, innovation systems, and regional disparities in Central Europe. The articles employ spatial modeling, panel data analysis, and comparative case studies across EU countries, with a recurring emphasis on Czech and Visegrád regions. Keywords across publications include urban change, R&D performance, social protection, and public service financing.
He is a member of the Czech Geographical Society and the National Geographical Committee, and serves on the Academic Senate of his university. He collaborates extensively with researchers such as Lukáš Danko and Lenka Smékalová.
Bednar advises and supervises students on regional development, public policy, and urban planning topics. He has been involved in numerous research projects funded by Interreg, Visegrád Funds, the Czech Ministry of Culture, and the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic, including COST and INTER-COST initiatives. His leadership in the Regional development and public policy under creative economy project highlights his role in shaping policy-relevant research.
He is associated with research teams focused on new working spaces, creative ecosystems, and cluster governance. His lab or research group appears to focus on spatial analysis of creative industries and regional innovation systems, often using data from European NUTS regions and urban case studies like Prague and Milan.
