Paula Berwanger is a Lecturer in the Residential College at the University of Michigan, specializing in American Sign Language (ASL) and Deaf Culture. She established the ASL Program for undergraduate language study within the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA) in 1999 and serves as coordinator for ASL placement evaluations. Her work focuses on adult second-language learning of ASL by English speakers and language assessment methodologies.
Education: M.A., Wayne State University.
Research & Teaching: Berwanger has conducted seminars and workshops on ASL teaching and learning for students, interpreters, and educators. Her expertise bridges language acquisition theories and practical pedagogy, emphasizing inclusive approaches to language education.
