Dr. Paula A. Quatromoni is an Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the Boston University School of Public Health and the Department of General Medical Sciences at the Boston University School of Medicine. She also holds an appointment in Programs in Nutrition at Boston University. With a D.Sc. in Epidemiology from Boston University and credentials as a Registered Dietitian, Dr. Quatromoni bridges clinical nutrition practice with population health research.
Dr. Quatromoni's educational background includes:
- BS in Nutrition from the University of Maine, Orono
- MS in Nutrition from the University of Maine, Orono
- Dietetic Internship at Beth Israel Hospital, Boston
- D.Sc. in Epidemiology from Boston University School of Public Health
Her research program focuses on nutritional epidemiology with particular expertise in eating disorders (especially among athletes), sports nutrition, obesity prevention across the lifespan, and diet-related chronic diseases. Dr. Quatromoni directs the Nutritional Epidemiology Lab, where her team investigates dietary patterns and their relationship to health outcomes using data from longitudinal studies like the Framingham Offspring Study as well as conducting intervention research.
Dr. Quatromoni has secured research funding from diverse sources including the National Institutes of Health, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Charles H. Hood Foundation, and Unilever Research & Development. Her current projects address eating disorders in athletes, childhood obesity prevention through school-based interventions, and diet-related chronic disease mechanisms.
Her scholarly contributions include numerous publications in high-impact journals, with recent work focusing on:
- Nutritional counseling approaches for athletes
- Behavioral interventions for type 2 diabetes management
- Weight stigma and treatment experiences for binge eating disorder
- Eating disorders in male athletes
- Athlete-specific treatment outcomes for eating disorders
Dr. Quatromoni has received multiple teaching awards including the Excellence in Teaching Award from Boston University School of Public Health (2014) and the Whitney Powers Award for Excellence in Teaching from Sargent College (2007). She was named the Nutrition and Dietetic Educators and Preceptors Area 7 DPD Outstanding Dietetics Educator in 2016.
Professionally, Dr. Quatromoni serves as Chair of the Sports and Human Performance Nutrition (SHPN) dietetic practice group of the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics (2023-24) and as a Senior Consultant at Walden Behavioral Care, where she works with the Walden GOALS Program treating competitive athletes with eating disorders. She is also an active media spokesperson on childhood obesity for the American Heart Association.
