Paul van der Schoot is a Full Professor at the Department of Applied Physics and Science Education, Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), and holds a part-time Lorentz Professorship at Utrecht University. His research bridges physics, chemistry, biology, and nanoscience within the Soft Matter and Biological Physics group.
- M.Sc. in Molecular Life Sciences (Wageningen University, 1987)
- Ph.D. in Theoretical Physical Chemistry (Delft University of Technology, 1992)
Research focuses on statistical mechanical theory applied to soft biological matter, nanoscience, and self-assembly processes, with applications in synthetic/natural supramolecular assemblies, liquid crystals, proteins, and colloidal particles. Key contributions include theoretical models for virus self-assembly and electrical percolation in nanotubes.
Recent work emphasizes artificial viruses for drug delivery, validated through experimental data and EU-funded Distruc consortium collaborations. Patents in self-assembly and nanotechnology demonstrate practical impact.
