Dr. Paul Wender is the Francis W. Bergstrom Professor of Chemistry at Stanford University, with a courtesy appointment in the Department of Chemical and Systems Biology. He received his B.S. from Wilkes University and Ph.D. in Chemistry from Yale University, followed by an NIH Postdoctoral Fellowship at Columbia University. He served on the faculty at Harvard before joining Stanford.
- Affiliations: Bio-X, Sarafan ChEM-H, Stanford Cancer Institute
His research spans chemistry, biology, and medicine, focusing on drug delivery, molecular imaging, and synthesis. Key projects include eradication of HIV/AIDS, overcoming resistant cancers, and treating neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer's disease. His group develops novel computational tools, reactions, and transporters (e.g., CARTs) for therapeutic applications.
Recent publications highlight advancements in RNA delivery (2024-2025) using guanidinylated serinol and isoprenoid CARTs, PKC modulator studies for HIV latency reversal, and vancomycin conjugates to combat antibiotic resistance. These works demonstrate his interdisciplinary approach bridging chemistry and biomedical challenges.
- Scientific Awards:
- Royal Society of Chemistry’s Sir Derek Barton Gold Medal (2024)
- Tetrahedron Prize for Creativity in Organic Chemistry (2012)
- Arthur C. Cope Award (2015)
- Prelog Medal (2013)
- Ernest Guenther Award (1988)
As an educator, he has received multiple teaching honors, including the Hoagland Prize and Dean’s Teaching Award. His lab sponsors postdoctoral researchers and doctoral candidates, with collaborations across Stanford’s Medical School and external institutions.
