Paul Wachtel is a Professor of Economics at New York University's Stern School of Business, where he has served since 1972. He has held leadership roles including Chair of the Economics Department, Vice Dean for Program Development, and Academic Director of the BS in Business and Political Economy. His research focuses on monetary policy, central banking, financial sector reform, and transition economies. Wachtel has contributed to leading journals such as the Journal of Money, Credit and Banking and the Journal of Banking and Finance. He is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Banking and Finance and co-editor of Comparative Economic Studies.
Wachtel earned his B.A. from Queens College of CUNY (1966), M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Rochester (1968, 1971). He has been a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research and served as a senior economic advisor to the East West Institute. In 2016, he received the DOCTOR HONORIS CAUSA from Bucharest University of Economic Studies.
His recent work examines central bank independence, pro-cyclical capital regulation, and the impact of financial policies on economic growth. Articles analyze topics like credit deepening's dual role in growth and crises, foreign bank behavior in syndicated loans, and the implications of ownership changes on bank risk-taking.
Wachtel has chaired the Dubrovnik Economic Conferences for over 20 years and serves on the Academic Board of the International School for Economics in Tbilisi. His research spans monetary policy responses to crises, transition economies' institutional development, and the evolving role of the Federal Reserve in global finance.
