Paul Turner is a Senior Lecturer in Audiology at City, University of London, where he has been working since 2005. He previously worked at UCL's Ear Institute and the Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital. At City, he has held significant roles including Divisional Lead (2014-2020), Programme Director for various Speech and Language Therapy programs, and Joint Head of Department.
Dr. Turner's educational background includes an MSc in Audiology from University College London (1994-1996) and a BSc (Hons) in Physics with Medical Applications from King's College London (1987-1990). Before his academic career, he worked as a Clinical Audiologist at the Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital from 1984-1995.
His research focuses on several key areas in audiology and speech science, particularly on speech perception in noise, auditory processing disorders, and bilingual speech processing. Dr. Turner has made significant contributions to understanding how background noise affects speech perception in monolingual and bilingual listeners, as evidenced by his 2021 publication in Noise and Health. His work has implications for educational settings where many students are learning in a non-native language.
Dr. Turner has received multiple awards for his contributions to the field, including the Dean's Award from the School of Health Sciences (2019), the Education Excellence Award from City, University of London (2014), and the Ruth Spencer Prize from the British Society of Audiology (2004) for his work organizing educational events and conferences.
As an educator, Dr. Turner teaches several key modules including Hearing and Speech Sciences, Acoustic Phonetics and Audiology, Psychoacoustics, and Habilitative Audiology across both undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Speech and Language Science and Therapy. He has also been actively involved in professional organizations, serving as a member of the British Academy of Audiology and the British Society of Audiology.
