Paul Sniegowski is the 21st President of Earlham College and Earlham School of Religion since August 2024, while concurrently holding the title of Professor of Biology at Earlham College. Previously, he served as the Stephen A. Levin Family Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Professor of Biology at the University of Pennsylvania (2017–2024). His academic leadership includes steering Penn’s liberal arts curricula, pandemic-era instructional adaptations, and launching new academic programs like Environmental Humanities and Data Science minors. He advocates for First-Generation, Low-Income (FGLI) students through initiatives like the Penn First Plus Office and the FGLI DAB advisory board.
Education: B.A. in Music (Indiana University School of Music); M.A. in Biology (Indiana University, Bloomington); Ph.D. in Biology (University of Chicago). Joined University of Pennsylvania in 1997 after a postdoctoral fellowship at Michigan State University.
Research focuses on evolutionary and population genetics, particularly genetic mutation rates and mutational phenomena. Supported by grants from the Sloan Foundation, NSF, NIH, and NASA, he has co-authored nearly 70 peer-reviewed papers and mentored dozens of students. An award-winning teacher, he is currently writing a book, *Persistence of Error: A Natural History of Mutation*, aimed at non-scientists.
Notable contributions include leadership in Penn’s Inclusive Excellence 3 program (Howard Hughes Medical Institute grant) and public science outreach. Lives on campus with his spouse Gail Kienitz, their children, and their Golden Retriever, Willa.
