Paul Rees is an Honorary Reader in Cardiology and Resuscitation Medicine at the University of St Andrews' School of Medicine. He holds dual roles as a military interventional cardiologist at Barts Heart Centre and a Royal Navy Surgeon Commander. His affiliations include the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine (Defence Reader since 2017) and the Defence Resuscitation Committee (Chair since 2013). Dr. Rees specializes in circulatory support, battlefield hemorrhage treatment, and out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. He leads the Defence Endovascular Resuscitation Group and co-chairs the British Cardiovascular Intervention Society’s OHCA group.
His research focuses on resuscitation medicine, emergency vascular interventions, and military medicine. Notable projects include the ERICA-ARREST feasibility study and a Rosetrees Trust-funded initiative on keyhole techniques for hemorrhage control. He has authored over 40 publications, emphasizing clinical trials, endovascular techniques, and prehospital care.
Dr. Rees also contributes to medical education, supervising dissertations and conducting viva voce examinations at the School of Medicine. His military service includes combat deployment, humanitarian missions, and Ebola treatment unit work in Africa. He remains active in international workshops and emergency medical service innovation.
