Paul Mummery

Prof Paul Mummery holds the Chair in Nuclear Graphite Technology at the University of Manchester's Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. He leads research in material microstructure-mechanical property relationships, focusing on nuclear graphite, anisotropic materials, and 3D imaging techniques. His work integrates advanced X-ray tomography (via the Henry Moseley Facility) with high-performance computing for FE modeling of large-scale problems. He contributed to Manchester Imaging strategy, positioning the university as a global leader in X-ray imaging applications across engineering and life sciences.

Education: DPhil in Materials Science (University of Oxford), first-class degree in Chemical Physics (University of Bristol). Prior roles include lecturer at the University of Leeds and research at the National Physical Laboratory.

Research interests span nuclear materials, composite materials, 3D imaging, finite element modeling, and high-performance computing. His projects address reactor safety, irradiation effects, and material degradation under extreme conditions. He collaborates with institutions like Dalton Nuclear Institute and Advanced Materials Research Beacons.

Supervised 16 postgraduate students and led projects on nuclear graphite irradiation creep, reactor life optimization, and waste management. His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to affordable clean energy and industry innovation.
