Paul Michael Galdas is an internationally recognized Professor of Men's Health at the University of York's Department of Health Sciences. With over two decades of research experience, he has dedicated his career to improving healthcare engagement for men through evidence-based, gender-responsive approaches. His work bridges clinical practice, academic research, and policy development to address how masculinity influences health behaviors and service utilization.
Professor Galdas began his career as a Registered Nurse in Coronary Care before earning his PhD from the University of Leeds in 2006. He has held academic positions at the University of British Columbia and the University of Sheffield prior to joining the University of York in 2011. His educational background combines clinical nursing expertise with advanced research training, creating a unique perspective on men's health issues.
His research focuses on developing practical interventions that enhance men's engagement with health services, particularly in mental health, workplace wellbeing, and management of long-term conditions. He employs primarily qualitative methodologies to explore how gender norms affect healthcare seeking behaviors and to design more effective, accessible services for men. His current work emphasizes proactive, early mental health interventions to prevent crises rather than just treating them after they occur.
Professor Galdas leads major research projects including the BALM programme (funded by Movember Foundation) focused on mental health for male NHS frontline workers, and serves as co-investigator on several significant studies related to smoking cessation in mental health settings (ESCAPE trial) and mental health inpatient care (SCEPTRE programme). His research has influenced health systems, workplace strategies, and elite sporting environments.
He actively supervises doctoral and master's students in areas including men's health, nursing research, self-management of long-term conditions, and qualitative methodologies. His collaborative approach extends to numerous interdisciplinary partnerships across healthcare sectors.
Professor Galdas holds leadership positions including Chair of the Yorkshire and Humber Regional Deans of Health Group and membership on the Council of Deans of Health advisory groups. He also serves on the international editorial board of Nursing Open, contributing to scholarly discourse in his field.
