Dr. Paul Leong is an Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at Monash University and a Respiratory, Sleep, and General Physician at Monash Health in Melbourne, Australia. He is also a Fellow in the NHMRC Centre for Research Excellence in Treatable Traits. His research focuses on airways disease, complex dyspnea (including vocal cord dysfunction/inducible laryngeal obstruction), and novel imaging techniques like ultrasound and dynamic computed tomography. He co-founded the Global Initiative for Inducible Laryngeal Obstruction and developed the ILO/VCD toolkit, a global clinical resource. His work has impacted respiratory, sleep, and general medicine practices.
Leong leads projects such as 'Pulmonary artery pulsatility as a predictor of survival following hospitalized exacerbation of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease' (2018–2021). He contributes to peer-reviewed journals with articles addressing COPD exacerbations, breathlessness mechanisms, and asthma-VCD/ILO comorbidities. His research aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, emphasizing health equity and innovation.
He supervises PhD students in respiratory medicine, particularly in airways disease and VCD/ILO. Leong’s accolades include impactful peer-reviewed publications and international collaborations. He advocates for patient-centered outcomes and improved diagnostic tools in respiratory medicine.
