Paul Komor is a Lecturer at the University of Colorado Boulder, where he has taught energy courses since 1997. He is currently a faculty affiliate of CU's Environmental Studies (ENVS) department and on the research faculty of CU's Renewable and Sustainable Energy Institute (RASEI). Additionally, since 2015, he has served as a Senior Advisor to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
His educational background includes a B.S. from Cornell University and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Stanford University. His professional journey has included teaching at Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School and serving as a Project Director at the U.S. Congress' Office of Technology Assessment (OTA), where his 1992 report on Building Energy Efficiency significantly influenced the Energy Policy Act of 1992.
Dr. Komor's research focuses on renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies, policies, and markets. His work spans practical applications in grid integration, distributed generation, and energy storage, with particular emphasis on policy frameworks that enable renewable energy deployment. His research demonstrates a consistent focus on bridging technical understanding with policy implementation, addressing challenges in both developed and developing contexts, including island power systems. His publications reveal a progression from foundational policy analysis to increasingly sophisticated examinations of grid integration challenges and market mechanisms.
His notable honors include the Diebold Foundation Fellowship for European policy studies (2001), the 2006 MAP/Ming Visiting Professorship at Stanford University, and recognition as a contributor to the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize awarded to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), for which he co-authored a chapter on Mitigation Options for Human Settlements.

- 2006 MAP/Ming Visiting Professor of Energy and the Environment
- Nobel Peace Prize contributor (2007) as part of IPCC
Dr. Komor has played a significant role in energy education, founding CU's energy certificate programs and serving as CU's Energy Education Director from 2009 to 2014. He has taught numerous courses including Energy Science & Technology, Renewable Energy Policy, and specialized field courses. His work with IRENA has expanded his international impact, particularly in developing practical guides for renewable energy deployment worldwide. His book Renewable Energy Policy (2004) has become required reading at multiple universities globally.
As a faculty member at RASEI, Dr. Komor contributes to one of the nation's leading energy research institutes, collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to address complex energy challenges. His work bridges academic research, policy development, and practical implementation, making significant contributions to both scholarly understanding and real-world energy solutions.
