Dr. Paul Johnston is an Associate Professor in the Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences at Mount Royal University. He holds a BSc and MSc from the University of Alberta and a PhD from the Australian National University. As editor of Palaeontographica Canadiana, Canada's national paleontology monograph series, he oversees scholarly publications in paleontological research.
His research focuses on the evolution of bivalve mollusks and ancient marine ecosystems, particularly communities associated with hydrothermal vents and seeps. Dr. Johnston has conducted fieldwork globally, including in the Rocky Mountains, Arctic Canada, and the Gobi Desert. He is recognized for his hypothesis reinterpreting the Burgess Shale fossil site as an ancient hydrothermal seep community.
