Paul J. Healy is a Professor of Economics at The Ohio State University and serves as the Associate Director of the Ohio State Experimental Economics Laboratory. He has been a faculty member in the Department of Economics since 2007.
He earned his B.S. in Industrial Management from Purdue University in May 2000, followed by an M.S. in Social Sciences from the California Institute of Technology in June 2003, and completed his Ph.D. in Social Sciences from Caltech in June 2005.
Dr. Healy's research focuses on economic theory and game theory, with particular emphasis on mechanism design theory and behavioral mechanism design. His work integrates theoretical and experimental methodologies to develop socially-beneficial economic institutions. He has made significant contributions to understanding dynamic stability of economic mechanisms, prediction markets, efficient allocation of budgetary resources (including work with NASA), and theoretical properties of belief updating in the presence of informative signals.
His recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on belief elicitation techniques, experimental methodology, and mechanism design. The trend shows increasing sophistication in experimental design, with particular attention to incentive compatibility, response precision, and statistical inference in experimental settings. His work bridges theoretical economic models with practical experimental implementations.
- National Science Foundation CAREER award (2009) for young scholars, which funded both his research and annual summer camps for high school students to participate in educational economics experiments
Dr. Healy has advised numerous graduate students, many of whom have presented their work in the Theory/Experimental Reading Group that he co-runs with Yaron Azrieli. His NSF CAREER grant specifically funded educational outreach to high school students, demonstrating his commitment to expanding economics education. He has published in top journals including the American Economic Review, Journal of Economic Theory, Experimental Economics, Economic Theory, Management Science, and Psychological Review.
He co-runs the Theory/Experimental Reading Group at Ohio State, which serves as a hub for theoretical and experimental economics research. The group organizes regular seminars, provides career guidance for students, and maintains a placement record for graduates since 2011. He also directs the Ohio State Experimental Economics Laboratory, where numerous economic experiments are conducted.
