Paul J. Barr is an Associate Professor at The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy & Clinical Practice and Biomedical Data Science within the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College, and a member of the Center for Technology and Behavioral Health.
His educational background includes:
- PhD from Queen's University Belfast, Ireland
- MSc in Public Health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine
Dr. Barr's research centers on shared decision making (SDM), particularly for individuals with depression, and the development of patient-facing interventions. He founded the OpenRecordings initiative in 2015 to evaluate clinical utility of audio/video healthcare visit recordings, creating HealthPAL software that applies natural language processing to extract key information from visits. His work optimizes patient self-management through improved medical communication strategies and care partner engagement.
As an educator, he co-directs the Dartmouth Institute's PhD program and leads the T32 Training Program in the Science of Co-occurring Disorders, teaching courses in grant writing, centered communication, and 'The Patient Revolution' on capturing patient voices. His research receives substantial funding from NIH and PCORI.
He directs the multidisciplinary OpenRecordings group conducting nationwide clinical trials, with publications in NEJM AI, BMJ, and JAMA demonstrating impact on healthcare communication practices.
