Dr Paul Hurley is a Senior Teaching Fellow in Academic Practice at the University of Southampton, specializing in transdisciplinary artist-research. His work focuses on participatory research, inclusive academic practices, and creative methodologies, blending art, geography, and science. He contributes to projects addressing agri-environment policy, farmed animal welfare, and antimicrobial resistance in food systems.
Active in research groups such as the Population, Health and Wellbeing (PHeW) group, Hurley collaborates across disciplines including agriculture, veterinary science, and medical humanities. Notable projects include the TRI-SoMe Chicken initiative exploring socio-metabolic relations and the FSRN Food Safety at Home study. He has supervised PhD student Dominic Watters in Geography.
Hurley’s external roles include speaking engagements on microbial landscapes during the pandemic (2021). He has been recognized with the Third Prize (Art) in the 2022 Biofilm Create! Competition. His teaching and supervision roles emphasize researcher development programs at the Centre for Higher Education Practice.
